This female black bear has a special place in my heart. She was very first bear I ever photographed and back in 2017, her cubs were the first cubs I had ever seen or heard. I've met, observed and photographed her every year since. I'm a true believer in keeping wild animals wild and naming them is not something I tend to favor, but with her long term presence, wonderful nature and local notoriety, she is affectionately known as Hazel. So, for this portrait style image, I am honoring her, by name. Thank you Hazel. May you live many more years in safety and comfort and bring many more black bear cubs into the Smoky Mountains. We love you!
