Description
For most of us, it's hard to imagine a vessel of this magnitude coming to the end of its useful life. Destined for a scrap yard in Brownsville, Texas, the 690 foot long American Fortitude was built in 1953, as the Ernest T. Weir. Sold in 1978 and renamed the Courtney Burton, she served on the Great Lakes transporting taconite, limestone, iron ore pellets and wheat. This massive floating container was purchased as the replacement freighter for the Edmund Fitzgerald, whose tragic fate was forever memorialized in the haunting song by Gordon Lightfoot in the mid 1970's.
